Dragoon

During the time of the civil war, a mercenary dragoon ravaged the area. Killed by a band of farmers, they blew off his head with a musket.

-Epitaph

Dragoon is a Headless Horseman encountered in Spooky Hollow. He is the main focus of the mission and freeing him is the main goal of the level. He is an enemy haunter controlled by cousin Earl Walton who is performing a ritual using Dragoon's skull in the windmill located across the river.

Appearance

Dragoon is a headless man riding a horse. He seems to wear a 1860's Confederate uniform. The uniform consists of a gray coat with yellow accents and shoulder pads on each shoulder, a grey shirt covered in blood from his neck stump, grey trousers with a red streak going through them and brown horse riding boots. He wields what seems to be a Dragoon saber in his right hand. His horse is a black Morgan horse with brown hoofs. The horse has a brown saddle which Dragoon sits in and a blue, ornate bridle in its mouth. Dragoon is missing his head, with a little bit of spine poking out of the bloody stump.

How To Free

Dragoon wants his skull to be returned to his grave. The skull is currently in possession of cousin Earl Walton who is using it to command Dragoon in order to get rid of the Hamner family from the area. Dragoon will periodically ride through the level, scaring the first mortal he comes in contact with away. The Ghost Master must act quick because if all mortals are scared away, the mission will fail. The first thing that needs to be done in order to free Dragoon is exposing cousin Earl to the rest of the family. Mortals won't normally go to the windmill on their own, so using attraction powers is necessary in getting them to see what Earl is doing. When a mortal sees what's going on inside the windmill, they will rush to the house to tell others what is going on. Unfortunately, Dragoon will try to scare the mortal away. To prevent this, the Ghost Master can use Unearthly Calm (Fingers and Daydreamer already know this power and can be bound nearby.), Possess the mortal (Black Crow can be freed in this mission and used for this purpose), use Hypnotic Image to make the mortal ignore Dragoon (Both Blair Wisp and Torchy have the power available for free) or disrupt the ritual by using strong wind powers to knock the skull over with the millstone. However, if the skull was knocked over before, Earl will block the millstone from moving in which case even stronger wind will be required to move the millstone. If a mortal reaches the house, they will rally others and head over to the windmill to confront Earl. They will then retrieve the skull and head over to Dragoon's grave where they will bury it and set the headless horseman free.

Trivia

  • Dragoon is based on the Headless Horseman from 1820 Gothic story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
  • Dragoon is the only Headless Horseman as well as the only ghost with the Deadly Pursuit power in the base version of Ghost Master.
    • In Complete Edition, Azrael was added to this category and can learn this power.
  • Dragoon shows up in the Spooky Hollow level poster.
  • The actual details of Dragoon's story do not make historical sense. Gravenville is canonically a New England town and therefore would have been removed from fighting during the American Civil War. Furthermore, the circumstances around his burial make the story even less logical, as why would he have been buried where he fell on a private farming estate?
    • A counter theory by the game's writter explains the discrepancy[1].
  1. "The Dragoon is a mercenary during the civil war - [...] In 1861, the dragoon name was withdrawn from use and all mounted troops became 'cavalry'... but if he left military service to become a mercenary, it makes perfect sense that he would pick up the nickname 'the Dragoon'."Why would he be in New England...? [...]. Just as The Simpsons is set in a town that is every town, Gravenville is a haunted town that is every haunted town. But let's suppose that it is in the north east of the United States: there is still no problem to him being a mercenary in the civil war - if he isn't fighting for either the North or the South. By definition, anyone can hire a mercenary... indeed, plenty of adventure stories depend upon this detail, and his epitaph expressly tells us he "ravaged the area" during the time of the Civil War. I presume I was thinking he was a mercenary for some nefarious land owner, and not for the armies as such." https://blog.ihobo.com/2023/10/origins-of-ghost-master-part-three.html
