The Painter

If genius and insanity are two sides of the same canvas, it`s a mercy that the Painter never created a self portrait. People didn't want to hang his paintings so the Painter hung himself.

-Epitaph

A painter, who killed himself after Old Man Carter refused to display his painting. Tortured and perhaps insane, he is a powerful but temperamental spirit.

-Beta Epitaph

The Painter is a Phantom who joins the Ghost Master's team at the start of Act 3.

Appearance

The Painter is a slender man with green skin and milky white eyes. He wears a shirt with red and white stripes, black trousers heald up by a brown belt with a gold buckle, brown shoes and a black beret. The Painter holds a paint pallet which has many different paint colours in his left hand and a paint brush smeared with red paint in his right hand. An additional paintbrush smeared with yellow paint rests on his left ear. The Painter's face is long and thin and includes a long nose and extreamly raised eyebrows which are long as well. The Painter has facial hair styled into a Van Dyke with a long, curly mustache. His hair is black and very short.

Cut Content

The Painter was supposed to appear as a mortal called Vincent Scarlet in The Uninvited, who was commissioned by Carter to paint his portrait. Carter hated the portrait and ended up placing it in the attic, which caused The Painter to hang himself. He would then reappear as a Restless Spirit in Where There's a Will... / The Butler Didn't Do It, bound to the same painting. He would want the Ghost Master to have a mortal place the painting where others can see it. If he was not freed in that mission he would return once again in Dark Passage.

In addition, he would have been the head of the Scarlet family and have a single child, Bill Scarlet.

"Filthy critics!"
Restless Spirit 1 (Unused)
"Death, the ultimate artistic expression. Suicide, a soliloquy for lost souls. That portrait was the finest work I ever did, but Carter, that wine-besotted philistine, would not hang it upon his walls. Said it was too abstract; too vague. Has he no understanding of impressionism? The man has no appreciation for art. And he gave me no appreciation for life."
Restless Spirit 2 (Unused)
"How can the spirit of an artist rest when his work goes unappreciated?"
Seeing Bill Scarlet (Unused)
"My son? Can it be? Has he shamed me by marrying into this clan of putrescent evil?"
Lay To Rest (Unused)
“Ah! My masterpiece! Yes, the world lost a great talent when I hanged myself. Serves it right!”
Dispel (Unused)
"I know when I`m not wanted."

Trivia

  • The Painter was ment to appear as a mortal Vincent Scarlet in The Uninvited along with Buck and Carter. They would later return as a restless spirits in Where There's a Will... / The Butler Didn't Do It and Dark Passage (Only Painter).
    • His role in The Uninvited was to make a painting of Carter.
    • The name Vincent Scarlet is a reference to Frederick Loren, a character played by Vincent Price from a 1959 movie House on Haunted Hill.
      • The reason for him not sharing the character's name is due to Painter's connection to the Scarlet family which in turn, is a reference to a board game called Clue/Cluedo.
  • The Painter's story and character references many famous painters who had committed suicide due to being underappreciated during their life whilst struggling with mental health issues. A famous example of this would be Vincent Van Gogh who's art was only appreciated after his death.
  • The Painter used to have a slightly different name where he used to just be called Painter without "The".
  • The Painter used to have a slightly different design where he would hold three brushes instead of just one.
