This old baseball legend died before he could break the home run record.

-Beta Epitaph

Smokin' Joe is an Apparition who joins the Ghost Master's team at the start of Act I. He was meant to be the main spirit in Field of Nightmares.

Appearance

Smokin' Joe is a tall caucasian man with pure white eyes with green tint. He wears a standard baseball uniform consisting of a blue shirt with white stripes, a white undershirt, white trousers with blue stripes on the thighs held up by a white belt and white sneakers. The trousers are visibly dirty with dirt from presumably a baseball pitch. Smokin' Joe's face is visibly scars all over it as well as having a few golden teeth. He is also bald which he covers with a blue baseball hat with white stripes.

Cut Content

Smokin' Joe was supposed to be the main ghost of cut mission Field of Nightmares. He was once a raising baseball star who unfortunately brained himself with his own baseball bat. In death he was trapped on the plot near Hamner's and wanted the plot to be turned into a baseball field. The construction of the baseball field was the main focus of Field of Nightmares and would be interrupted by many different groups which want to take the land for themselves.

Additionally, Smokin' Joe would have also appeared in Spooky Hollow but it would not be possible to free him, instead Smokin Joe would have served as a teaser for his proper appearance in Field of Nightmares, with lines telling the Ghost Master to "Wait until the season begins".

Trivia

  • His name is a reference to Shoeless Joe from 1989 Fantasy/Drama, Field of Dreams.
  • Smokin Joe and Thorne are the only leftover ghosts in the game that did not have their audio left in the files.
  • Smokin Joe, Soulscreech, Thorne and Azrael have all been left over in the files in a playable state but were not accessible by normal means.
    • They were all the first ghosts to be added by Complete Edition.
  • Smokin' Joe might be based on an actual baseball player called Smokey Joe Williams.
  • During Smokin' Joe's Terror Incarnate, his head works as a projectile and will work on mortals who see it even if they are not close to the body. For example if he is bound to the tea set in Poultrygeist/The Calamityville Horror, the head will scare mortals in the hallway and the entrence of the dinning room as they can see it through the arc leading to the living room.
  • Smokin' Joe used to have 2 early names, those being "The Unnatural" and "Smokin' Joe Mustang".
  • Smokin' Joe's current epitaph was written by the Complete Edition team as at the time of his inclussion no version of it was known, it is unknown if the epitaph will be swapped now.
  • Smokin' Joe used to either have a different voice actor or a different style to his voice at once point based on his unused Dispel line.
